The winners of the Amarula Best Retreats in Africa Awards 2009 have been announced at a prestigious ceremony in Johannesburg. Now in its second successful year, this awards collection celebrates and rewards the rich diversity of retreats throughout Africa. Amarula, in aligning itself with the best in Africa, continues to be actively involved in searching for prestigious and sophisticated retreats whilst promoting the continent as a prime destination for first class world travel.
Each entry, from across Africa, went through a rigorous judging process in their entered category of choice. A panel of well-established and respected judges from tourism, food and design backgrounds were inspired by the level of entrants at extensive judging sessions.
“The success of last years awards entrench the Amarula Best Retreats in Africa Awards as a credible point of reference for luxury travel in the African continent,” said Best 100 Director, Paul Kerton, “We are again impressed by the effort each and every entrant put into their entry packs which is an indicator of how well these awards have been received by the luxury tourism industry.”
The accolade of “The Best Retreat in Africa” went to Chongwe River Camp located in the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia. Situated on the banks of the Zambezi River, owned by the Liebenberg family and Thierry Dalais, and run by Chris Liebenberg, Chongwe River Camp is one of the oldest, most established and best respected safari camps in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi Valley.

The runners up in this category are Wolwedans Dune Lodge in the NamibRand Nature Reserve in Namibia and Woodall Country House & Spa in Addo, South Africa, which won silver and bronze respectively. Chongwe River Camp also won the coveted Best Designer Retreat in Africa category.
